Formula 1 drivers raced for the 40th time this weekend in Hungary and for the second year in a row it’s a Mclaren driver that claims the win leading to another 1-2. It was quite an entertaining race, for some it was full of joy, for others it had a bitter taste…
Useless, no confidence…
During qualifying we’ve seen Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton again not getting into Q3 though Antonelli achieved to get p10 during the race. This was again disappointing and Lewis Hamilton did not hide his disappointment with strong words “I’m useless”. Unusual behavior coming from the 7th time world champion, especially after such motivation he had during the very beginning of the season, but after really complicated race weekends where he struggled to even get into the points. He also mentioned during media day that there would be tears during the summer break.
Kimi Antonelli on his side is hard to blame considering he is a rookie and already went on the podium this year, he admitted himself that he was less confident with the car. He was brought in Formula 1 too early if we listen to what people think, however he should have way better performances after the summer break considering that the last two race weeks were mostly hard for him.
Surprise!
The surprise happened during the last part of qualifying, everyone had done one fast lap or more at that point Oscar Piastri was on top ahead of his teammate. Then everyone went out again to do one last lap to improve their time, though it does not go as planned. Weirdly we see that first Lando Norris does not achieve to improve his lap time, then Charles Leclerc improves his lap time and puts himself on top for the moment with a surprisingly really good time and then the confirmation arrives as even Oscar Piastri does not achieve to improve his own time. After everyone takes the chequered flag it is confirmed Charles Leclerc is the one who takes pole at the Hungaroring ahead of the two Mclaren drivers.
“Today is the day I don't understand anything at motorsports” -Charles Leclerc
No one seemed to be able to explain what happened or how it happened, not even the poleman himself who appeared more than surprised at the radio as his engineer announced his pole position.
No victory Ferrari
The race started off really well for Charles Leclerc who kept the lead ahead of Oscar Piastri. Everything seemed alright before the first pit-stop, after which the Ferrari driver seemed frustrated at the radio as he explained that he wanted to be asked about the strategies before his team chose to stop him following the Mclaren stop.
“Now it will be a miracle if we even get on the podium”
There is definitely an internal problem within the team as the two drivers already complained multiple times about the fact they were not communicating enough about the strategy and how their requests were not respected most times. The drivers never mentioned it during any interview but it is definitely an issue now, the lack of communication creates a lot of conflicts and frustration at the radio. However this issue isn’t why Leclerc did not get on the podium he clarified later during an interview that they had a problem with the chassis and he obviously was not aware of that during the race.
This weekend at the Hungaroring Ferrari missed out on their biggest opportunity to win so far this season, and also missed on the podium only scoring 12 points with Charles Leclerc in p4 and Lewis Hamilton in p12.
1-2 two years in a row
Lando Norris claimed his 9th win at the Hungaroring ahead of his teammate and George Russell.
The race did not start in a good way for Lando Norris. He started third on the grid, tried to overtake his teammate on the first few corners, then dropped to fourth position.
As Leclerc started to struggle with the strategy after following Piastri’s, Lando’s engineer asked him if he wanted to try a single stop strategy which he agreed on. This was a risky strategy but turned out really good as his teammate with a two stop strategy could only catch him at the very end of the race and couldn’t overtake him. Which led him to another win ahead of his biggest rival in the championship, about that Oscar Piastri leads the championship by now, only 9 points ahead of his teammate Lando Norris.
From last 7 days ago, to scoring 16 points
Another surprise this weekend from being the last cars in Belgium Aston Martin managed to collect a total of 16 points during the race in Hungary. It’s been quite the rollercoaster for the team, they were overall last in Belgium the previous week and had both cars in the top 10 this week.
From free practice both drivers found pace in the car and were quite content about it, then qualified p5 and p6. They managed a really good race with an overall really good race pace considering where they were the week before. For the first time in a long time both cars and both drivers were competitive, though they still have to understand why it works on some tracks and not on others. They go into summer break with good points and will be able to fully enjoy it.
Championship fight
There are many fights for the constructor championship standings whether it is at the front or in the midfield. The closest and the most interesting lately has been the fight in the midfield especially between Aston Martin and Stake F1 team who are currently battling for the 6th position. Sauber has been performing really well compared to last year and have been pretty competitive during the last races. The team has scored in every race with at least one of their drivers since the Spanish Grand Prix and even stood on the podium in Silverstone with Nico Hulkenberg who finally celebrated his first ever podium. Gabriel Bortoletto also scored really good points for the team as he did in Hungary with his 6th position, those are really good points for the rookie and the team. The team went into the summer break in 7th position of the championship, a single point behind Aston Martin (6th).
